    Their Miso Soup has alot flavor and their bbq short ribs was amazing. Only flaw to that is that they don't serve you a big portion. . It's unique and has a very homey feeling with the decorations on the sushi bar. I liked that it was close to the hotel I was staying at. It was an easy walking distance. I rate it an 3 because the hostess was just standing there. She brung us soup but forgot to bring us a spoon for it. Not only that she forget to refill my water and didn't give us a straw. Probably never going back. I felt like their service could've been better.

    I've eaten here 3 times this week so I thought it'd be nice to write a review. This is for their takeout only since I've never sat down here and ate. Sushi Express is a Korean owned sushi restaurant located along Great America Parkway. The prices are a little higher than some other places, but it's understandable since they're nearby all the tech companies and Levi's Stadium. Their sushi is mediocre; it's not horrible but I've definitely had better. I usually get their hamachi or salmon sashimi and the fish doesn't taste fresh. The salmon sashimi still tastes pretty good but their hamachi is lacking flavor. The rice that comes with the sashimi combo is usually really dry so I'm assuming they gave me old rice. I've only gotten new rice once. Their rolls are nothing special. I can never finish them because they get sickening real quickly. I only come here because I work across the street, otherwise I wouldn't go out of my way to get sushi here.

    I like restaurants that offers daily specials and Gombei offers this. The setting is more of a Japanese family- style restaurant conveniently located in Santa Clara The meals are all reasonably priced, ingredients fresh and portion plentiful. They don't take reservations and no official waiting list. It's based on first-come, first-serve honor system.

    I've been here a couple of times. The food is mediocre. Nothing amazing, but there has been times where I am not too please with their service. They seems to be grumpy at times...I don't know why. I just come here since it is close to my workplace. Warning: Their raw fish isn't too fresh, go for their cooked or non-raw fish rolls instead. I always think that they'll get better or I'm too lazy to drive far from work....my mistake.

    This was the most disappointing sushi experience I've ever had. The waitresses were not friendly whatsoever and the sushi was a huge waste of money. I had a California roll which was just a chunk of brown avocado and a huge price of imitation crab. I also had a shrimp tempura roll which was fishy and the shrimp was dry. Save your money!!

    Came here last week with my boyfriend since we were on a trip to Santa Clara and staying nearby at the Marriott, which was within walking distance luckily. I got the chicken katsu curry and the RockCal roll which tasted great! I loved the tempura flakes on the sushi. My bf got the teri chicken & tempura bento box, which he said was ok, but the chicken was a little dry. Prices were reasonable for a sit-down restaurant. They had a wide variety of sushi too. I'm knocking down 2 stars for their very poor service. There were about 5 other tables with customers and the 2 servers hardly came by. One table nearby us was still waiting for food which they might've forgot. Another table was stuck looking at the menu forever. Thankfully we got our food quickly, but had to wait long for a water refill. The younger server was just looking through a receipt book at the register. Then she went to straighten up a tall stack of menus one by one. The older server was stocking the fridge and putting cups on shelves in the back. All the customers were left waiting. If I ever was in the area, I'd only get take-out from here since the service was horrible.

    This place has decent sushi when it comes to someone craving it. When it comes to their customer service they are HORRIBLE. I suggest you find a better place than this because these people did NOT acknowledge the fact we were waiting. Did not come up to us to tell us to hold on a couple of minutes and take FOREVER to take our orders!!

    I have been there a few times and food was pretty good. The only complaint I have is the servers definitely need an attitude adjustment . Real short with patience . So be sure to have an idea what your ordering. They really don't seem to helpful for newbies to sushi .i think might be a family business. If so the mom and daughter need some customer service classes .imo. i won't go back .

    First time here and I will NEVER come back. Is it wrong to order water and tea? Heck, she had to asked me "Why, water and tea?" And made a disappointing face. Food is mediocre service sucks!

    Everything but. I'm not sure if it was the crowd on xmas eve eve lunch, but it was slow slow. I sat down at 1pm, ordered, and I did not get my hand roll (scallop, spicy) and my whatever-roll until 1:25pm. I thought that was way too long and abnormal for the valley. The hand roll was all right, and the roll had plenty of avocado, shrimps, and mayo, so it went down easy. Issuing the bill and getting it signed off, also took a long time. Took a good 10 minutes. Place is very small and there is very little parking. I can see why it would be jammed and tough to find a spot to park during peak lunchtime. My verdict: The name "sushi express" (at least this week) is a mis-nomer. I'll have to come back again to see if it was really a season-to-be-slow thing...I'll give them the benefit of doubt this time.

    DISGUSTING!!!!!! I a person who loves sushi. I can live off of it. But today I had the most disgusting sushi. I will not be back! If you want good sushi go to Kazoo in Japan town

    I debated 3 or 4 stars...but went with 4 Place is very small and there is very little parking. I can see why it would be jammed and tough to find a spot to park during peak lunchtime. Luckily I went at 8pm on a Tue and neither were an issue. Just be aware if you are heading there at noon. Sushi was good and the price fair. $6 for two Maguro Tuna Sushi and $7-10 for rolls depending on how elaborate they are. Waitress was very friendly and attentive. There were only 4 of the tables with people and my sushi took a little longer than I expected. I can't imagine if the place was jammed full how long it might take. I gave them a 4 because I liked the place and will go back....I will just make sure to avoid peak times which with my work schedule is easy. I think many of the low ratings have nothing to do with the food and mostly to do with the fact that it is small so it could be a long wait for a table, that the parking is limited and that the staff is small so the orders probably que up for the sushi chef. In the end, I think if you avoid the peak hours you will be very happy with the place.

    Love these guys :) always fresh always perfect. Best of all they're great people to chat with (despite the language barrier), but hey I make an effort to get to know them and even try to speak a little Korean ;-) I still don't understand what some people dislike about this place. They're a hole in the wall sushi restaurant with one sushi chef, one very good one who is good at what he does and bless him for bring able to tolerate the lunch crowd everyday. This place has and continues to be good to me.

    I like it. It pretty good (been 10+ times) but no not amazing. But that's my expectation for an inexpensive local sushi place in Santa Clara! I'm not expecting Nobu, lol. Nice staff. Owned by a kind family. The wife reads from the bible quietly during her downtime. Don't worry - she doesn't mention anything religious ever.... It's her own private thing. I just think it's really endearing! They seem very kind and caring.

    Convenient location to Classic Gaming Expo at the Hyatt. More affordable than sushi at the Hyatt. My daughter and I enjoyed the experience well enough. Sushi Express gets a solid three 3 S tars from me but I would have a hard time giving them a better score. This is because (a) I haven't eaten much here (b) their age dashi tofu and their miso soup seemed a bit off to me. Not bad. Just a little unrefined compared to your average sushi place. Granted we came almost at their Saturday afternoon closing time of 3 PM so YMMV. Still My daughter liked her food and you can't discount your child being happy. So a solid, if unremarkable, score for Sushi Express.

    Santa Clara really doesn't make it easy to work around here what with all the mediocre and below lunch options! I have had take out from here as well as eaten here. Service is quick & efficient, but the food is lackluster. I got a special veggie roll, which was completely coated in a sweet teriyaki syrup & was not good. The sauce was not listed on the menu. My boyfriend was not impressed with his roll either. We each only got one item each due to the prices as well. We went at an off time so we did not have to deal with cramming into that tiny place with tons of other people. Their one good, fresh roll is a plain avocado roll. They are generous with the avocado, & the rice is perfectly seasoned. I also like the oshinko roll (Japanese pickled radish). Sometimes I will come here for a takeout order of those 2 rolls as a snack, but I would not return for a full lunch or any other item!

    I am always willing to give small establishments a shot, especially for quick and cheap eats that are near where I work. Unfortunately, this place falls over on service and food. It took more than 10 minutes to get a menu after I was seated and another long wait for my order to be taken. I ordered the Saba Shioyaki Bento lunch with Grilled Veggie Tempura. The food was marginal at best. And then, you guessed it, another 10+ minute wait for the check and another long wait for my change. The waitstaff look like family members and they just looked out of it - kind of sad. Guess I'll have to try Burritozilla in that same strip and see if it delivers any better.

    Convenient location - close to where I work. Busy but never too busy :) Good veggie sushi. I love their veggie bento box. I must say that the owners need to educate their servers on the menu. Every time I've been here, the server has always been unsure and clueless about the question my colleagues and I have asked her about certain items on the menu. - not good - my dear.. spend some time, it will bring way more tips and compliments your way.

    My coworkers and I came in here for lunch. It was alright. Not terrible. They food is moderately priced. It is $9.95 for a lunch bento box. You can choose one item ( teriyaki salmon, chicken, or beef) and a second item like sashimi, nigiri, or tempura. Unfortunately they didn't have any Tamari sauce available. I wasn't disappointed by this. I only wished that there were substitutions to the salad or some other type of sauce so that my meal wasn't so bland. I ordered Teriyaki Salmon. It was grilled well, but it did not fill me up and was lacking a bit of flavor. The sashimi was very good and nicely portioned. The ginger seemed a little old. It could have definitely been fresher. Overall, good place for a quick, between work meal that is convenient and not too crowded during lunch. Hopefully you are able to take an hour for lunch because the service isn't very fast.

    There's not much in terms of affordable decent sushi in the Great America area but this place does the job when I find myself distracted with a ferocious sushi craving (known to hit me the hardest on Mondays). I've been here twice, both times by myself, which might have been my rookie mistake because I easily spent around $20 for two rolls after tax and tip. The prices are on the average end - not cheap by any means but not outrageous either. When I had lunch here this week I had the crunch roll which was a roll with kani, avocado and cucumber with deep fried bits of nori poured over the top. It was really different from other crunch rolls I had but it was only $4.95. The other roll I had had salmon and avocado on the inside and unagi and avocado on the outside. I think I'll have to try a bento to get a better feel for their strong and weak points but like I said, if you want decent Japanese food and care more for the convenience than for being conversative with your wallet, this place fits the bill pretty well.

    The only requirement for lunch was to be within walking distance of my hotel. When I came along to a strip mall with several options, I knew I was in luck. After surveying the options, I ended up at Sushi Express. Yes, sushi from a strip mall sounds like a bad mistake waiting to happen. Yet it wasn't. Don't get me wrong, it was no five-star sushi and the prices are a bit high for lunch specials. Still the food was fresh, the sushi portions were more than ample, and the service was friendly. Check it out if you need a quick bite to eat or just want to walk out of your hotel!

    close to work and walking distance... check other options to eat at in case its too busy... check bento boxes for those who aren't adventurous with 'sushi' and sushi or various rolls available to try if you are adventurous... check Overall experience...average. Nothing special, but you get your sushi fix if you get a craving. We sat ourselves at a table since the waitresses were helping others but we were quickly given water and a menu. Fast and easy.

    My taste buds are still recovering from the hit-and-run they experienced with Sushi Express at lunch today. I needed a quick lunch, and as Sushi Express is located close to where I work, and as it also had an average 3/5 star Yelp rating, I thought that I would give it a try. Unfrotunately, this time, Yelp led me astray. I ordered the Nigihama Maki (sushi rolls stuffed with hamachi tuna and green onion), plus the Teriyaki Chicken combo, which came with California Rolls and Miso Soup. The Nigihama Maki was probably the best part of the meal - at least the hamachi was reasonably fresh, and complemented the green onions nicely. However, the Nigihama Maki rolls were tiny and poorly constructed, and they kept wanting to unwind themselves, so picking them up with chopsticks became a bit of an intelligence test. But at least they were edible. The rest of the meal was a disaster. The Miso Soup had a strange, off taste to it, and from the tiny bits of disintegrated tofu at the bottom of the bowl, it seems as if this was leftover soup from the day before. The California Rolls tended to fall apart when I picked them up with my chopsticks, and they had cheap surimi in them, instead of the usual crab salad. The surimi in the Caliofrnia Rolls was either almost tasteless, or else tasted as if it had been sitting in the freezer for a while. The Teriyaki Chicken was drowned in a teriyaki sauce that was too sweet and too salty for my taste; moreover, the cook overcharred the chicken, adding a nasty, burnt overtone to the dish that was very overpowering. After the meal, I actually needed to buy a pineapple icy from another establishment, to flush the nasty flavors of this meal out of my mouth. I give Sushi Express 1/5 stars. The restaurant itself was fairly neat and clean, prices were mostly reasonable, and service was fast and friendly, so I really wanted to like this place and give it a higher rating. However, the food there was so hideous that I just can't.

    thursday dinner and empty...desire quick and simple japanese...name sushi express fitting...udon broth quite poor...diluted dark soysauce water?...agedashi tofu worst tasted...hard overbattered nuggets of firm tofu...separate dip of more hot soysauce water in appearance and taste...standard roll creations...fish freshness questionable...washing down with hot sake the only delight...

    Horrible service! Eater BEWARE. Came here during lunch around 1:30pm (after peak hours) with my mom, it wasn't crowded at all. The server showed us to our table, but it was right in front of the entrance door and my mother was cold. So we asked the server if we could take the booth in the back -- should've been OK right? WRONG! The server (girl) gave us a nasty look and sharply told us "no I can't because you're only 2 and the table is for 4". Fine, I tried to understand her response even though THERE WERE NO OTHER PEOPLE WAITING and the restaurant was almost empty!! So I asked her if she could close the door a little bit so the breeze wouldn't be so strong -- AGAIN she gives me a blank look, doesn't even bother to answer, then haughtily waves towards the small table again "just sit here". HECK NO! My mother and I stormed out of there in a flash and will NEVER BE BACK! Even though this place is close to work, I will never come here for any reason, even if it's the last sushi place on earth! The service sucks, BIG TIME!

    Surprisingly fresh and delightful, the rolls kept coming out from the tiny sushi bar in this little strip mall in Santa Clara. Felt like a little peice of Japan. We enjoyed a variety of rolls, Cispy Ebi, Rainbow Roll, Spider Rolls all excellent! About $7-10 per roll.

    I roll by Sushi Express everyday on my way to the Airport . Today it was Sushi Expresses day. So I rolled my Work Whip to Sushi Express , I was Jamming Eminem and Rhianna's new song . I rolled up and parked in the lot . I wandered in to Sushi Express its a Hole in the Wall ,but nicely decorated. I was greeted and seated . I had the place to myself LOL. Since it was so hot today and I'm in mind meld I ordered Chicken Teriyaki ,California Roll and a Calamari appetizer. It came in 15 minutes . Portions were on the smaller size . Food was of average quality . Sushi Express is in a convenient location. I rolled away in the Work Whip cranking AC/ DC Highway To Hell . Ill have to try to catch the Sunset Tonight LOL.

    Had a late lunch here today, maybe 1:45. Seem to have missed the lunch crowd -- there were several parking spots available in the small lot of the strip mall. Service was friendly and attentive, giving me refills on my hot tea and asking if I wanted extra wasabi when I ran out. May have seen me taking an iPhone picture of my plate and been thinking I was Yelping, though :) The "hot tea" was only lukewarm, unfortunately. Even the fresh refills. I ordered albacore, hamachi, and sake nigiri and a small Great America Parkway roll. The roll had spicy tuna and tempura eel inside, with avocado, tuna, eel, tamago, and some drizzled sauce outside. The small GA Roll was five pieces and cost about $10, there is a large version that is twice as big and twice as expensive. When I finished ordering the waitress said "No miso?" and I said no... but she brought me miso anyway. It was pretty good, certainly not watered down and it was hot which I appreciated since I have a bit of a cold and the hot tea wasn't hot. Nigiri came out first and I noticed that this is one of the few places that give you too much fish for the amount of rice per nigiri. The fish slices were about 2" by 1.5" square and the rice ball underneath was about half the size you're used to. I prefer a good balance between the amount of fish and the amount of rice. The rice was a bit drier than typical sushi rice, but not super dried out. I found the albacore to have a mushy texture and didn't really like it. The sake was also fairly mushy. The hamachi, on the other hand, was EXCELLENT. Firm, but tender and buttery. I have come to the conclusion that January through March is the best time to order hamachi -- just about every time I've had hamachi during those months it has been excellent, while at other times it can be hit or miss even at very good sushi places. I was nearly done with the nigiri by the time the GA Roll came out, and I was wishing I hadn't ordered so much food. The GA Roll was yummy but I probably wouldn't order it again -- the roll was too big to handle easily, the toppings tended to fall off when dipping it in soy sauce, and it takes at least 2 bites per piece of roll. Plus it was a bit expensive. Total for three orders of nigiri and the one roll was about $26. A bit high in my opinion. The decor is nice although it was a little bit cold today sitting in the middle of the room. Not sure if I'll be back.

    Not gonna lie, I enjoy this place. It's not authentic or anything, but honestly what -is- authentic? Japan doesn't even serve rolls except futomaki. If you're looking for authentic, you should go to Japantown or Japan. Anyway, food is delicious, service is not bad but not super duper awesome, prices are OK, the restaurant is small. I have never experienced anything horrible or foul here. Everything I have ordered has been pretty decent and I enjoyed all of it! The Special Bento is freakin' huge. It's like $14.... pricey, but I couldn't even finish it. NOMS :) It came with Rice, Soup, Salad, choice of Meat, Tempura, Potstickers, Cali Rolls, Sashimi... pretty good, eh? I've been here a few times the past month since it's so close to work, not disappointed yet.

    I've been to this place a couple of times and am shocked on how low the ratings are when I yelped this place up. Walking distance from Mission college this place is a lot better than Yo Yo Sushi. Every time I've been here the place has been pretty empty which really surprises me. I've been here many times with my friend and we love every single sushi roll that we ordered. The miso soup to me seemed kind of old, or maybe it did not contain so much flavor. The tofu in the miso soup was extremely petite so I'm deducting one star because of the soup. The owners are extremely nice people and once a customer walks in, a greeting is heard right away. I know that many people go to sushi places expecting the rolls to be extremely big! However, keep in mind that sushi is meant to be something that you can just pop in your mouth without having to take many bites. The sushi rolls here are the perfect size, not too big and not too small. I must say, i wished that the wasabi was better but what I've found is that I barely dipped my rolls into the soy sauce/wasabi mixture because the full flavor was there in the rolls already (they also have two different types of soy sauce which is a plus for those who want low-sodium soy sauce) Rolls: California Roll: I know this is an average roll but I believe it tastes a lot better than other places. It contains a lot of avocados and everything- they put the whole crab meat in it, so you know that they are not skimpy on the filling (nor do they try to cover it up by adding tons of mayonnaise which is a plus). Even though this is an average roll, I'm extremely happy that they paid close attention and made sure that I got my money's worth. My friend and I also tried what i believe is the rainbow roll or the sunshine roll- extremely delicious. We've also tried the deep fried rolls and trust me, the owners make sure that you taste the full flavor instead of the oily batter that most sushi places use. The batter is perfect, not oily, old, rubbery,and the sushi rolls are not loaded with tons of batter. When the deep fried sushi rolls came out, it was crispy- just what I would expect. Did i mention the prices are very reasonable. Each roll costs 5- 15 dollars, (give and take a few). The owners are extremely nice and make sure that everything is going well. At other sushi places, while you are eating they place the check on your table already- making it seem like they are rushing you. This place is completely the opposite, they will wait until they see that you are completely done with your meal. Then they will try to make eye contact with you to reassure that you are done- they will then walk up to you and ask if you would like anything else and then hand you the check. Before leaving they will say thank you for coming (very polite and makes you know that they appreciate their customers).

    This place was empty when I rolled in at 6pm. Never a good sign. The menu was hilarious. It looked like the international house of sushi. There had to be 60 or more rolls on that menu when you added them all up! The only one missing was the Rooty Tooty Fresh an Fishy! Not super hungry so I ordered up an ebi/tako sunomono and a "crazy horse" roll. Sushi chef and server had zero personality. Sunomono was a 4 out of 10. Old limp ebi and overly tough tako. Everything was served on top of a pile of daikon/jicama so sunomono dressing was completely soaked up and not available for cucumbers. Roll was basically tuna and yellowtail and avocado in the center with masago on top. The rice was pathetic. Too hard, tasteless, and coming apart. The fish was Passable at best. I bet this place caters to those that like their rolls built to be deep fried as this is the only way any one could give this place more than two stars. Trust me, I am being generous.

    Sushi Express is our usual go to place for our quick lunches at work. The food comes fast and is always fresh and delicious. I've tried a good portion of their menu and I have yet to be disappointed. They have a good selection of rolls and bento to choose from. Bentos are pretty big so I always have to take the rest of it to go. The waitress always draws a cute happy face and writes thank you on the take out box. :D

    This review is only for the rolls during lunch, we didn't try anything else: Had the rolls here during lunch and they came out fast but tasted like they just came out of the freezer and were overly moist- disgusting, not worth it.

    2.5 stars rounded up in case our experience was a fluke. Lunched here today with Crys B and while the sushi was good enough to come back for, the time we spent at Sushi 'Express' was aging. We went during lunch and the place was busy, but there were always several tables empty. Still... we waited over 30 min for our sushi. When it arrived, my hamachi nigiri was really fresh but the rolls were very loose and fell apart. I think they do that to make the portion look bigger but it's really annoying and messy to try to eat a loose specialty roll. The waitress was nice but I've worked service industry enough to know that anything over 20min wait needs to be recognized by the server, even if it's not their fault. The table that came in after us was paid and out the door as we were just getting our last dish. *sigh* I was late to my next meeting. I would do take-out and would try eating in again maybe. Maybe ours was a simple mix-up of tickets...

    I had a hotel guest tell me this place was good. Despite me telling him (based on the reviews) is was just OK. I decided, maybe these people just came at the wrong time. Now I've decided he has no idea what good sushi is. On my way to work, I called and put in an order of nigiri sushi dinner, since I figured it'd be the easiest way to determine the freshness of the fish. And fresh it was not. All the fish was chewy and stringy except for the sake nigiri, but even that was fishy and looked pale;it lacked that vibrant pink orangey color fresh salmon should have. The nigiri dinner includes miso soup and salad, sake, tako, ika, ebi, shiromaguro, maguro, hamachi, and another fish, I think albacore.(*for those non japanese: salmon, octopus, squid, shrimp, white tuna, tuna, yellowtail, and albacore) 8 pieces with soup and salad $16.95. Are you serious?? It's cheaper at Gombei AND it's fresh there! The service was nice enough, all smiles as they handed me my to go order which is a must in my book. I don't know, maybe one of these days I'll sit at the bar and order straight from the chef which is what he did. Until then! Ciao for now!

    The name says it all. The food was blahhhh I got the salmon teriyaki bento: the salmon was paper thin...i think they slice each filet in half to make more...it was so thin that it was crunchy when you bite into it. other than the skinny salmon, i have no other complaints. my friend go the dragon roll which she said was watery and the wasabi was tasteless. needless to say-we were disappointed 1 star for conveniece 1.5 stars for service

    I've worked around the corner for 13 years - and there is not a whole lot to choose from as far as sushi goes in this immediate area. So they get 5 stars for convenience...The sushi is fresh. What else do you really want from a small strip mall sushi joint. It's not lavish or fancy. The food is good, always fresh and the service is fast.

    This gotta be one of my favorite sushi spots.. I go there at least once a week to get my golden gate roll (fried California roll) or salmon teriyaki... I recomend this place to anyone who enjoys good Japanese food.

    Just alright. $10.95 for a lunch bento box with chicken/beef/salmon teriayki, soup, little salad, and 1 side. My salmon was just edible, a bit hard, and a bit fishy. Also salmon portions were rather small. Miso soup was standard. Gyoza were all fried and ordinary. My fave part was actually the dressing on the salad. Bottom line: Meh. Rather average and overpriced for a lunch bento box. And parking sucks during lunch time.

    For a place that gets as busy and crowded as it does, I was disappointed at the quality of their food.Since it was just me eating I chose to order my food to-go. I got a chance to look at their menu and stood there for another 10 minutes waiting to have my order taken. Once it got taken down I was there for over half an hour waiting for my food. Another customer who was waiting with me said that she loved Sushi Express' food. So I was pretty excited to see what they would have in store for me. It was so not worth it!! Service was okay for crappy overpriced sushi. Sorry. =T

    I've been here about 7 times and it's decent enough for me to go back. Not bad and not one of the greatest. It's a small restaurant with 3 booths and 9 tables that sit 2 - 4 people. The sushi bar fits about 8 people. The decor is interesting. The booths have a roof over them giving the little town in japan feeling and a mirror across the ways kind of makes the place look a little bigger than it is. Most of the times my food comes to be warm, but there was a time when my beef teriyaki was a bit cold. It felt like it was in the fridge and then quickly thrown in the microwave for 20 seconds. I brought it to the waitresses attention and they were prompt in replacing it. Service is quick and polite. I always have tea when I eat there and they refill it themselves unlike other Japanese restaurants that leave the tea kettle on your table. If you're around the area and want Japanese food, then this place is a decent choice.

    How did my experience at Sushi Express go? Parking sucks, but since I frequent the coffee shop next door, I'm familiar with this so it's not a surprise. The waitress yawned as she handed us the menus. Definately bad manners. Then she walks off. We wait patiently until she decided to come back to take our order. She didn't understand what we were ordering, not because of the language barrier, she just didn't know what was on the menu. We waited forever for the food, which honestly, was overpriced and tasted off, not fresh at all. The food sucked, the service sucked, the prices sucked. I WILL NEVER COME HERE AGAIN!

    I ordered over the phone. A chicken teriyaki bento & a Philly roll. It was lunch so I knew it was gonna take a while. THe lady told me 20 minutes. My friend and I gave them 45 minutes. When I got there the place was freaking tiny. Like you can't breathe tiny. And.. my food wasn't ready. I literally watched the chef fucking make my roll!! I was pissed. Now if my friend wasn't preggo I would have walked out. See I don't mind lunch rushes. I understand, but if you tell me 20 minutes and I give you 45 and you aren't even making my food till I get there.. your business sucks !!

    I worked right next door to this place and I have to say that it's alright. The service was adequate considering the waitresses knew me but other than that, the pricing was not up to par with the food. First, I work in the same plaza as you and you can't even hook me up? Seriously though... I've helped them out tons of times and they still charge me like I'm a normal customer. Oh well. Second, when I say "I'm allergic to shellfish", that means: I'm allergic to shellfish. Why did I find a crab leg in my tempura? I've already told them about my condition and that even imitation crab will send me into the hospital. I guess they can't understand why in the world would I want vegetable tempura only... *sighs* Overall, I would recommend this place only as a quick fix for lunch with 4 or less people (they have no seating room) and the likelyhood of them getting your food order correct will be better.

    I go here because it's convenient and some of the specialty rolls are tasty. I wish they had better tasting options in the $3 range though other than kappa maki (yawn). For slightly better sushi where you'll get out the door spending $4 less, check out Kobe in the Mervyn's Plaza in Santa Clara.

    Pretty good rolls and fresh cuts of sushi. The apps were lacking especially the gyoza which were very doughy and lacked flavor. For a quick bite - this place is fine and I would go back.

    Susan D. and I were meeting for lunch and we decided on sushi. Well, Sushi Express sounded like it would be pretty quick, it was near my office and has a decent rating. I'm not taking any stars away because of parking, but I highly suggest either a really early lunch or a late lunch, because parking here sucks. There are what look to be about 4 of 5 (maybe more) restaurants in this strip mall and not nearly enough parking. Everything we had was pretty tasty. I tried the Nadeen Roll, which is spicy tuna, crab and avocado, and the Spider Roll, which is one of my faves. The Nadeen Roll is good and is also a good size, in that you can eat it in one bite. The Spider Roll, while quite good, was way too big! Luckily I have a big mouth, but it's a total pain to try to eat that thing in two bites because everything just falls apart. The reason for 3 starts is the service, which is severely lacking. I got my Miso soup immediately after ordering, but our 4 plates of very sushi took over 30 minutes to come out. They only brought it out after Susan D. pulled out a piece of cake she had bought to try, on the way, because we were both so hungry. And, we noticed that a couple who came in about 5 minutes after us had finished eating, paid the bill and left, right as our third and fourth plates finally came out. Will I try Sushi Express again? Maybe I will, just to give it another chance, although I'd be very willing to order the food to-go.

    Update: My first review was on 10/26/2010. It is a year later (almost to the date) and I need to update my review. The past few times we ordered from here the quality of the fish was really bad... last time it was to the point of uneadible. I'm tempted to lower the rating, but there were some good times in the beginning, and the last time I ate here was maybe 3-4 months ago. I also remember one time we ordered, someone went to pick it up 20 minutes later (as the person the phone said), and then had to wait 40 minutes b/c they ran out of rice... not cool man. Original 10/26/2010: I'm shocked by the low star ratings. My co-workers and I love it, and we're a pretty picky bunch (it's hard to find a place we all like). We order dinner from here (9-10 of us) and no compliants on messing up our orders yet. I've eaten form here about 10 times in the last 2 months - but always take-out, never even stepped foot in the place :) I alway get sashimi/sushi and a GA roll (it's $18, but soooo good, and I'm not paying for it - _ - ). The fish here is really really fresh. I think they use the "older fish" for their poki-like dishes, so stick with sashimi or nigiri. The GA roll is becoming a team favorite. I've heard the chicken katsu is very good (this is from a harsh critic). I've heard the other rolls are good too. Dishes to think about before ordering: some firecracker salmon (deepfried salmon) was not liked by the team, happy salad is good but very very spicy There were some random things I've tried that I thought weren't that great - but if you stick with the nigiri or sashimi, you will not be sorry. Even with the "not so good" orders, I still give this place 5-stars b/c that's how fresh their sashimi/nigiri and how great the GA roll is. FYI - You might find a website online with a url of utahsushi - I checked out the menu and that is NOT this place.

    I wonder why this place has three stars? Because the four stars is because it's probably near perfect. I tried this place on a whim yesterday with my friend Joe because we were looking for food. It was pretty good in the fact that I felt like I just found a good Japanese restaurant. Edamame came out hot (YUM), tuna tasted fresh and the oshinko maki was lovely. Service was oddly cold in that Japanese stoic fashion, which is okay. It comes with the territory - right? The red dragon roll, my friend Joe had was good as well. Overall, not bad. I'd come back again and ride the Sushi Express if the fat girl inside calls for it.

    Like to give it 3.5 stars. Rain, rain go away. Dying for soup since I have a cold. Was heading to Su Ping for lunch to get some spicy combo soup but my friend says lets try here instead since he wanted Japanese. I looked at the menu and spotted Beef Udon Soup. Got my soup fix. With the name of Sushi Express, you wonder if it will actually be good. Decor - small, quaint little place. Nicely decorated. Parking - not so bad. But we came here early 11:45am. Beef Udon Soup - surprisingly good. Onions sliced thin cooked to tender. Carrots in Udon soup...who would of thought but it went well, a nice addition. Beef - taste like it was marinated in teriyaki sauce. That is a pleasant surprise. Noodles - tender and good. Broth - tasty and not drowning in coagulating beef fat. I was able to drink about 1/3 of it and felt better. At least it cleared up my congestion. Friend had bento box combo teriyaki beef and some sushi. I didn't try his food. But he seemed to enjoy it. Definitely will come back again for other items....it is a bit pricy but the service was good. Waitress was attentive for refills of tea.

    Standard. No flare. I had the joyful roll and although it was spicy as hell it just lacked. The miso its out of a box. The food comes out quick.service was less than par and not to friendly.no parking during lunch. I won't back.

    The first time my boyfriend and i decided to try this place out it was around 7pm. We live close by so we know how the parking lot can suck during certain hours of the day. We were kind of feeling lazy to drive over to the mervyns plaza to grub at our favorite sushi place, Kobe. When we got there, it took us by surprise. The name "sushi express" kind of threw us off. it looked like a normal sushi place. we thought it might have some kind of american twist to it. well whatever. it was empty so we decided to eat at the sushi bar. The sushi was delicious! the maguro was fresh and red, just the way i liked it. we even had a drink with the sushi chef. They were so nice to give us an extra on the house roll of some kind. when we asked what it was, the guy just said 'something special' lol everytime we go there now, they recognize us. last week when we went for dinner, they gave us some green tea ice cream on the house. that was sooo sweet of them. their service is always nice and fast. their ambiance is very tasteful. and their food is oooo sooo yummy!

    When I have a sushi (rolls, not just raw fish) craving during lunch time this is where I go or get take out. The sushi is better than average and far better than anything you'd get at a supermarket. Try the crazy hair roll (with a nice seaweed salad) and the Great America Roll.

    This place is fast, clean, good, and reasonably priced. Came here for dinner and had 3 rolls, a combo box, soft-shell crab, and sake and the bill came out to 50.00 after tax. The portions are good, the sashimi pieces are big and fresh. Definitely better that yo-yo down the way. I will be coming back. Glad there is a mom and pop place that's still around.

    Fast, friendly, and decent. I've been to Sushi Express many times. They always remember my order, seat me quickly and provide decent sushi for a good price. The sushi chef is a lot of fun and seems to really enjoy his work. Be aware that this is a small shop, so come with a party no larger than four for comfortable, fast service. The real problem is the parking. The lot itself is shared with many other shops and can become quite crowded. Walk if it's close enough.

    Decent place for a quick lunch. This place caters to all the local business parks in the area. It's located in a small strip mall. Parking is bad during peak hours. The majority of people that come to the this strip mall are going for fast food, so the parking turn over is big. This place serves a combination of Japanese and a small selection of Korean food. I never understood how that mixed. Not the best place to go for Japanese, but when you're in a rush. This place makes an excellent choice.

    FOOD: 1.) Philadelphia Roll = I asked with smoked salmon omg soooo goood and I'm so glad they had smoked salmon!! 2.) Fatty Toro = OMG it jus LOOKED so good! So nice and FATTY! ;P~~ drool 3.) Cherry Blossom = Hm.. it's good, but they made it slightly sweet? Not used to that. SERVICE: Nice and courteous. Another plus, they open mid day! Unlike regular Japanese places. ATMOSPHERE: A little fast foody looking, but has comfy booths....

    This is one of my favorite sushi places and one I frequent quite a bit. I'm going to do this review in reverse and start with the negative. If you go in here during peak lunch time, it can be a mad-house. I've only been here once between noon and 1pm on a weekday, and it took almost an hour to get even miso soup. It was so bad we almost left. Also they are closed on Sunday and in between lunch/dinner. That being said, come any other time and it will be great! Every other time I've went here (and I have been here many many times) has been fantastic. This is the ultimate quick sushi stop. If I'm in a rush to get to work, I can be in and out in 15 minutes, and the prices are extremely reasonable. This is also a great place to come with friends for dinner, and is far far far superior to YoYo sushi in Mercado. If you're seeing a movie on Fri/Sat and want sushi, consider coming in here instead. The head sushi chef is awesome. Really great guy, very friendly, and is very experienced preparing artistic and tasty sushi. He'll also make a completely random roll for you on the spot if you're feeling spontaneous =) You get miso soup and salad almost the second you order and if you come in frequently you will be treated very very well. This is a place that knows how to reward its best customers with even better service and special cuts. 4.5 / 5 stars. One of the best sushi values in the area by far.

    I eat here pretty frequently but usually only eat rolls. I have enjoyed all of the rolls that I've had. Their lunch specials and other food options look good as well and I may have to branch out and try something else here. Very friendly and attentive staff. For a quick and inexpensive lunch spot, this place rocks.

    Not the best, not the worst -- kinda in the middle. The Goldilocks of sushi i guess. At least the service is friendly and not rushed. Have been here for both dinner and lunch. I will go back mainly because it is one of the best options nearby for a sushi lunch.

    2.75 stars Sushi Express is taken as what it is, sushi on the go sort of deal. Lookin for something quick, in the area and to get your stomach to stop grumbling? here it is. We started out with vegetable tempura and gyoza. The gyoza wasn't bad. The tempura was not up to par. The veggies didnt seem too flavorful. The carrots were too stiff, like it should have been cooked a little more before breaded and fried. Obviously I don't know how to make it, but at other places, the veggies seem more soft, like they were slightly steamed prior to breading. I personally think it tastes better that way. The appetizer portions were pretty small but not expensive (tempura was about $6, gyoza about $8 i believe). They have a very large selection of rolls but we had the "no name" roll and the "volcano" roll. The "no name" was a spicy tuna that was tempura style. Seemed like it had more tempura than it had spicy tuna. The crab stick in the volcano roll barely had any flavor. I mean it sounds all pretty negative but i guess i just have a high standard for sushi at this point. I mean i'd come here again sure if i was in the immediate area, but i'm not gonna wake up in the middle of the night with a cold sweat screaming "SUSHI EXPRESS" two apps, two specialty rolls, a soda, green tea ice cream, sake and one beer: $50 Service was attentive and nice.

    this place is kinda alright. not really the best but good for lunch if your on great america parkway and you want sushi. the rolls are a little big and tend to fall apart but overall very yummy for lunch.

    I go to sushi express about once a week. They have good food, but it is a dat pricey. The family that runs it are very nice, and always greet me with a smile. Dont try anything with the crab(california roll exc) they dont mix it well, tastys a little fishy.

    Not too bad, not great. Had a california roll, dragon roll, and two pieces of tuna sushi. The california rolls were a bit bland, the sushi rice was undercooked, and the tuna itself had a weird flavor. It seemed the fish was probably a few days old. To top it off, the wasabi was so salty you couldn't choke it down, thereby ruining the sushi it was dipped in. It wasn't terrible because I was so hungry, but there are plenty of other place nearby that are much better. However the food was cheap ($14 for the above) and the service was fast.

The good: - Huge list of rolls - Fish was pretty fresh - Good atmosphere visually - Overall decent prices - Service was decent The bad: - Too many rolls to choose from (though, not necessarily a bad thing) - The place could use some music or something to liven it up. The ugly: - It took a long time to get our food, I'd estimate about 20-25 minutes. There was only another table of 5 that came before us, and my friend and I had ordered 4 rolls. It could've gotten 4 stars if the food didn't take so long. I can understand if the place is packed and I have to wait a bit longer to get my food.

    came here a couple times with my client at their suggestion. funny thing is, nobody got sushi and everybody stuck with the bento boxes so i did the same. good thing too, b/c i chose sashimi as one of my sides and it had that dried out, cracked look to it that tells me to never come back again b/c the sushi isn't fresh. their teriyaki was pretty good though, but how do you really mess that up right? go early to beat the lunch rush and don't order their sushi!
